Teaching Mathematics Through a Social Justice Lens. Radical Math and the Creating Balance Conference both provide training and resources for teachers to learn how to teach mathematics for social justice. The conversation around equity and social justice needs to go beyond just a conversation. This complex and challenging work requires attention to the issues surrounding equity and social justice in mathematics as well as knowledge, understanding, and resources to make changes at the local level. Oakland, CA. With an agenda designed to spur conversation, challenge status-quo thinking, and enable participants to share ideas across disciplinary boundaries, this conference will expose participants to a range of expertise across the themes of math and cognitive science, change management, Indigenous education, and social justice. For example, participating trainers coach elementary school teachers to not use traditional math lessons when teaching children to calculate the cost of food.
